No.1 & No.2 7,500cbm Liquid Carbon Dioxide Carriers Left Dock Successfully

Recently, the world first No.1 & No.2 7,500cbm liquid carbon dioxide carriers built for Northern Lights were undocked by DSIC Industry Co., Ltd.(DSIC) of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited(CSSC).

The total length of the ship type is about 130 meters, with width of 21.2 meters and structural draft of 8 meters. It flies Norwegian flag and is classified by DNV. The ship type was independently designed and completed by DSIC with complete independent intellectual property rights. The ship type research and development process adopts various innovative technological means, leading the future development direction of the ship type. The ship is equipped with two 3,750m3 full pressure C-type liquid cargo tanks made of special materials for transporting carbon dioxide, with maximum carrying pressure of 19 barg and resistance to low temperature of -35℃.Meanwhile, the main engine is equipped with two fuels, liquefied natural gas and marine light diesel. The emission level of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides meet the strictest requirements. Through the application of two innovative technologies, namely, rotor sails and bubble drag reduction, the emission level has been significantly reduced, and energy-saving effect has been improved, meeting the most advanced EEDI Phase III requirements.

From the beginning of bottom laying, DSIC has successively overcome the technical difficulties such as overall stability, capacity, line optimization, etc., special construction techniques such as liquid cargo tanks, sails, air lubrication, etc., and key nodes such as lifting and installation of large cargo tanks. Around the docking node, the technical department utilized advanced software to carry out fine analysis on two ships floating out of the dock at the same time, adjusted the docking pier arrangement scheme in time, and determined the load distribution scheme for the whole ship. The project team planned and formulated the overall program and detailed plan for the docking, as well as risk control measures, to ensure the safety of the ship floating operation process, and to lay a solid foundation for the smooth docking.

The ship will carry out underwater mooring test after leaving the dock, and after formal delivery, it will be applied in the European carbon dioxide capture and storage program, collecting carbon dioxide generated by European industries, transporting it to the carbon dioxide receiving terminal on the west coast of Norway to be processed and injected into the seabed for permanent storage at 2,600 meters below the sea floor. As the world's first ship specializing in marine carbon transportation and storage, it will play a leading and exemplary role in solving the global model of land-based carbon dioxide emissions, and will also become a landmark product of DSIC's green transformation.
